Summary

Everyone needs things to look forward to: big things and small things, on good days and on bad days, whether we actively create delight for ourselves or simply allow it to enter our lives。

In these pages, beloved author and illustrator Sophie Blackall has gathered a collection of joys for all of us—reminders that every day the sun comes up and new babies are born。 She includes suggestions that you bake muffins for a friend, or draw a face on an egg and put it in the fridge where it will smile at you each time you open the door。 With wisdom, whimsy, and compassion, the 52 illustrated ideas in this book offer moments of uplift and serendipity for yourself and your loved ones。

A message of hope and solace in hard times and of joyful anticipation at times of new beginnings—whether you're grieving a loss or starting a new chapter—and for all the days in between—Things to Look Forward to is full of gentle reminders of the objects, occasions, gestures, and ideas that warm our hearts。 There is always something bright on the horizon, and sometimes that horizon can be a lot closer than we think。

BELOVED AUTHOR: Sophie Blackall is a world-renowned, two-time Caldecott award-winning children's book author and illustrator。 Whether your kids grew up with Ivy & Bean and If You Come to Earth, or you're discovering Blackall's empathetic voice and gorgeous artwork for the first time, you're sure to fall in love with her new book for adults and folks of all ages。

UPLIFTING AND HOPEFUL: We all need a little reassurance that things will get better—this book offers just that, and so much more。 It reminds us that while looking forward is important, sometimes we can take matters into our own hands and create our own joy when we need it most。

THE PERFECT GIFT: Not only a promise of solace in tough times, this book is also a celebration of joyful new beginnings—after all, who has more to look forward to than parents of new babies, or recent grads? You'll want to give Things to Look Forward to to the grieving and the embarking alike。 Perfect for new moms, new graduates, those going through breakups or suffering a loss, and anyone who could use a little extra joy in life just because。

Perfect for:

• Those going through hard times and those experiencing joyous life events
• Parents (or aunts, uncles, grandparents) who have bought Sophie Blackall's books for their children and fallen in love with her artwork
• Shoppers looking for the perfect grad gift or baby shower gift
• People looking for a way to express sympathy with someone who is struggling or grieving

This is a remarkable, inspiring book for everyone。 Sophie Blackall is a multiple Caldecott award winning illustrator。 She is also an amazing, insightful and kind person。 Children and adults will love, Things to Look Forward To。 There are many subjects both adults and children will find meaningful throughout the pages and shimmering artwork。 You have to see and read the book in person to know what I mean。 The artwork shines and glimmers。 Literally。 The text is perfection and feels personal。 Maybe This is a remarkable, inspiring book for everyone。 Sophie Blackall is a multiple Caldecott award winning illustrator。 She is also an amazing, insightful and kind person。 Children and adults will love, Things to Look Forward To。 There are many subjects both adults and children will find meaningful throughout the pages and shimmering artwork。 You have to see and read the book in person to know what I mean。 The artwork shines and glimmers。 Literally。 The text is perfection and feels personal。 Maybe one of my favorite Sophie Blackall creations ever。 That is saying a lot because I love every work of Sophie Blackall。 Things to Look Forward to would also make an amazing Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthday。。。you name it, gift。 It is just that good and wonderful。 。。。more

(Not sure how to rate this so unrated it stays for now)Some good anecdotes and advice in here。 Overall I liked it, but there were a couple things present here that were clearly supposed to be well meaning, yet were ultimately a bit misguided, in my opinion at least。 Lovely illustrations, and the concept itself is cool。 Would definitely make a solid coffee table type book, as I imagine it’d be nice to flip through。 Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!

Sweet and inspiring with beautiful illustrations。

I am in a bit of a reading slump so that may have an impact of my perspective on this book。 I really wanted to like this book, but it wasn't for me。Part of it may be I wasn't familiar with the instagram series and thought this was going to be a nice inspirational read to flip through。 While the book is largely that, it just felt a little too light for me。 I like the sketches and each description of a thing to look forward to is short。 This book is probably best to read one at a time and not try I am in a bit of a reading slump so that may have an impact of my perspective on this book。 I really wanted to like this book, but it wasn't for me。Part of it may be I wasn't familiar with the instagram series and thought this was going to be a nice inspirational read to flip through。 While the book is largely that, it just felt a little too light for me。 I like the sketches and each description of a thing to look forward to is short。 This book is probably best to read one at a time and not try to consume in one sitting。 It seems like it's made for people who are going through a hard time or need some perspective, but especially given how inaccessible so many of these things are to some people right now it didn't really resonate with me。 My expectations didn't really align with what this book was actually about, but it's a cute concept。 。。。more

Reading this after Barnhill’s The Ogress and the Orphans and others, I see this maybe as the year in children’s books of pandemic-fueled human connection。 I like that。 Though maybe this isn’t a children’s book and Blackall will further limit her audience by, for example, specifying which way to vote。

I pre-ordered this book so it was in itself a thing to look forward to。 I always love Blackall’s whimsical illustrations and this one is organized around such a delightful theme that I think I’ll read it again and again whenever I need a lift。 It’s going on the shelf right beside Maira Kal man’s book of My Favourite Things。

Sometimes you just need a reminder to open your eyes & appreciate the joy that surrounds you。 This beautifully illustrated book is a small jewel to be treasured as you rediscover things to look forward to throughout the year。 Thanks NetGalley & Chronicle Books for the ARC。

This is a very light, sweet pick-me-up that might be a very thoughtful gift for someone going through a tough time。 The author acknowledges her own setbacks and shares the simple but effective coping mechanism of finding small pleasures and things to anticipate for happiness。 She explores 50+ examples, accompanied by sweet illustrations。 Most of the things are wonderfully, accessibly mundane and encourage the reader to find joy in even the tiniest and most unlikely places。 It's hard to read this This is a very light, sweet pick-me-up that might be a very thoughtful gift for someone going through a tough time。 The author acknowledges her own setbacks and shares the simple but effective coping mechanism of finding small pleasures and things to anticipate for happiness。 She explores 50+ examples, accompanied by sweet illustrations。 Most of the things are wonderfully, accessibly mundane and encourage the reader to find joy in even the tiniest and most unlikely places。 It's hard to read this and not find opportunities to smile! Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review! 。。。more

Lots of things to look forward to。 This book reminds you of them along with some lovely illustrations。 I especially liked the part about finishing things。 There is really something to be said for that。 Although, sometimes, for me anyway, it's just as valuable to not finish them。 I like the author's idea of the Museum of Unfinished Projects。 She talks about her Cupboard of Shame。 Sometimes I finish the project I have in there, and sometimes not。 Best to clean that out periodically regardless of w Lots of things to look forward to。 This book reminds you of them along with some lovely illustrations。 I especially liked the part about finishing things。 There is really something to be said for that。 Although, sometimes, for me anyway, it's just as valuable to not finish them。 I like the author's idea of the Museum of Unfinished Projects。 She talks about her Cupboard of Shame。 Sometimes I finish the project I have in there, and sometimes not。 Best to clean that out periodically regardless of whether you finish or not。 I received a free eARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

A delightful little book, with short passages on 52 things the author looks forward to and illustrations to accompany them。 The book is friendly and hopeful and feels almost conversational。 I really enjoyed this。 It would be a nice gift for someone who could use some encouragement。

Thanks to Netgalley and Chronicle Books for the ARC of this! This was relaxing and a joy to read。 I could see someone choosing to consume it more slowly, taking one of the 52 things and focusing on finding it in their week。 I read it in one sitting and loved the full page illustrations and everyday things to look forward to that we might not consider。

Stephanie

Such a sweet little book。 Each item is easily digestible and the artwork is beautiful and calming。 This book would serve as a nice, gentle reminder for anyone going through some challenging things that there will be and that there are things to look forward to。 Small as they may be, knowing that there are little things to look forward to can make such a difference in a time of need or crisis。

"Things to Look Forward To" is the perfect title and subject at this time in our world。 It's charming pictures and simple text reminds us that there are always pleasures left to experience, and that even the most simple things can bring us joy。 I would display this book as a positive reminder for myself, and for guests to thumb through for encouragement when visiting。 Thanks to NetGalley for this early copy to read! I really liked this cover。 I thought it interesting with its smooth stones and the title of this book was just what I needed。 I need some joy in my life。 How about you? Before I start this review I just want to say that the illustrations were beautiful。 Each one meant something special and I recalled found memories。 Yes, I’m a sap。 And this book made me grateful。 I read each page carefully, not wanting to miss a thing。 If I could sum this up in a few words it would be, thoughtful and beautiful。 I really liked this cover。 I thought it interesting with its smooth stones and the title of this book was just what I needed。 I need some joy in my life。 How about you? This book is just what you'd expect from the title: a list of some of the simple things in life。 It's designed as a reminder to count your blessings。 This is a quick read。 The author shares her own items and encourages the reader to create their own list。 Nothing overly original about the book, but it does provide an opportunity to pause, reflect, and be thankful。Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review。 This book is just what you'd expect from the title: a list of some of the simple things in life。 It's designed as a reminder to count your blessings。 This is a quick read。 The author shares her own items and encourages the reader to create their own list。 Nothing overly original about the book, but it does provide an opportunity to pause, reflect, and be thankful。Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review。 。。。more
